Exploring Solar Flares with Gamma Rays and Neutrons

چکیده

Gamma-ray and neutron emissions from solar flares carry information about the flaring process and conditions within the flaring magnetic loop. Extraction of this information from solar flare measurements requires an ionacceleration, transport, and interaction model with parameters directly related to those physical processes. In this paper we describe such a magnetic-loop model. Each of the gamma-ray and neutron measurable quantities depends to varying degree on the parameters of the model. We describe these dependences and construct a self-consistent approach to the analysis of high-energy flare data that provides an optimum set of parameters. To illustrate this approach, we summarize the analysis of gamma-ray and neutron data obtained from the 1991 June 4 solar flare with the Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment (OSSE), a satellite-based instrument developed at NRL.

GLAST Solar System Science

We briefly discuss GLAST’s capabilities for observing high-energy radiation from various energetic phenomena in our solar system. These emissions include: bremsstrahlung, nuclear-line and pion-decay gamma-radiation, and neutrons from solar flares; bremsstrahlung and pion-decay gamma radiation from cosmic-ray interactions with the Sun, the Moon, and the Earth’s atmosphere; and inverse Compton ra...

OVERVIEW Electromagnetic radiation extends over a very broad range of wavelengths, from gamma rays at the shortest wavelengths to radio waves at the long-wavelength end of the spectrum. In terms of photon energies, gamma rays are at the high end of the spectrum, starting at a few tenths of an MeV. This unit of energy (1 MeV=1.6×10 −13 joule) is used throughout this article. In solar flares, as ...

The Effect of Solar Particles in the Choice of Alloy Shielding in a Satellite

The damages and logical failures in dierent parts of a satellite may occur during a solar event, when a bulk of solar energetic particles approaching the Earth. During solar events, these particles may cause extensive damages which are even permanent (hard errors). A way of damage reduction is designing a proper coating as the fuselage. As protons are the major component of solar particles and ...

Gamma-Ray Polarimetry of Two X-Class Solar Flares

We have performed the first polarimetry of solar flare emission at γ-ray energies (0.2–1MeV). These observations were performed with the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) for two large flares: the GOES X4.8-class solar flare of 2002 July 23, and the X17-class flare of 2003 October 28. We have marginal polarization detections in both flares, at levels of 21 ± 9% and -...

Study of the absorbed dose rate of all rays emitted from the 252Cf brachytherapy source by the Monte Carlo method

The 252Cf brachytherapy source is a spontaneous fission decay source, which is used as a neutron-emitting source. In addition to neutrons emitted from this source, gamma rays are also emitted with the average energy of 1 MeV. In this study, using the Monte Carlo N-Particle code (MCNPX), the absorbed dose rates of the neutrons, the primary gamma and the secondary gamma that generated by thermal ...
